This book takes us through the nineteenth-century politics that propelled European admissions, Chinese exclusion to the immigration restrictions after World War I and the immigration quotas that later hampered the rescue of Jews from the Holocaust in the twentieth-century. This work shows that a small number of interlocking temporal processes, underlie the turning tides of immigration sentiments and policy regimes.
