Abstract:

The Windsoe Hotel is the Duchess of Melbourne's hotels. A grand old lady, the Windsor maintians its commanding position - and reputation - with the well-bred haughtiness that comes from more than a hundred years of experience. Quite apart from her elegance, tradition and professional stature, the Windsor can also claim regal characteristics of another class. Not only is the hotel named after the British royal family, but by a strange twist of parliamentary process the hotel was, at one time, owned by the Queen. Many rich and famous people have been guests at the Windsor. Situated close to Parliament House and the main theatres, it has been the traditional base for country people on their regular pilgrimage to the city bustle. The hotel has seen boom times and has somehow survived the bad years. The major restoration undertaken in the 1980s stripped back many coats of wallpaper and paint which marked the changing fortunes, and decorateing tastes, of Victoria. This history is largely based on the reminiscences of present and past staff, and the memories of regular guests and long-term residents. It is a story of a remarkable hotel - a hotel which has the pride and elegance and is, itself, treasured with pride and affection by the people of Melbourne. (Inside cover).
