Abstract:

Traces the history of the local Jewish community from the beginning of the 18th century. The town was part of Hungary until the end of the Second World War; now it is Dunajská Streda, Slovakia. Pp. 119-168 deal with the Holocaust period, when 2,400 Jews perished, out of a population of 3,000. Most of them were deported to Auschwitz on 15 June 1944; a group of young men capable of hard labor was sent to Dachau. The latter group, including the author, was liberated by the American army on 29 April 1945. Ca. 600 survivors returned to Dunaszerdahely, and later emigrated to Israel.
