Abstract:

Correspondence, historical notes, transcripts, legal papers, scrapbooks, and other papers collected by Hazard for a partially published documentary history of the U.S. The collection relates chiefly to such topics as the Stamp Act, Plymouth Colony, colonial Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, and the British occupation of New York City during the Revolution; it also includes records of the United Colonies of New England and letters (1791-1793) to the Duke of Richmond relating to the fortification of Grenada. Prominent individuals represented include Jeremy Belknap, Daniel Falckner, Benjamin Franklin, Hugh Gaine, Jedidiah Morse, Francis Daniel Pastorius, William Pepperrell, and Wiliam Shirley. Also includes papers (1790-1830) of Hazard's son, Samuel (1784-1870), consisting chiefly of scrapbooks, meteorological journals, and papers relating to the U.S. Military Academy.
