Abstract:

The introductory chapter provides a history of the Jews in England from 1066 to 1290 and of Conversos up to the end of the 17th century. Describes usury as viewed by thinkers, from Plato and Aristotle to the mercantilists. Analyzes the Jewish villain in pre-Shakespearean drama, and usury and the usurer in the poetry of Shakespeare and Dante. The figure of Barabbas in "The Jew of Malta" is a typical example of Elizabethan antisemitism, whereas Shylock is an archetypical example of the Jew.
