Abstract:

Abstract: Parents with preschool children having cystic fibrosis face daily complex care and treatment regiments, intertwined with many emotional components. This directed project presents the stressors and challenges facing these parents and the potential mental issues resulting from these identified triggers. This information should enable future nurse practitioners (NPs) to identify the parental needs, stresses, and challenges. An educational presentation was presented to graduate nursing students enrolled in a psychiatric NP program. Pretests and posttest were administered to 21 participants. The one-group pretest-posttest was used to evaluate the students' knowledge base. Results indicated that the educational training significantly increased the nurses' knowledge of parental stressors and challenges. This directed project indicated that such a course can accomplish the goal of improving knowledge for graduate students and that future programs would benefit graduate-level nurses.
