Abstract:

Abstract: Designing a program, identifying a potential financial source, and writing a grant proposal to fund an educational program for family members and care-providers of elderly hoarders was the purpose of this project. The proposed program provides educational seminars as well as a weekly support group for the target population. Program content was created to provide knowledge about hoarding behavior, supply access to social services, community referrals, and give emotional support to relatives and/or care-providers. Research supports that family members and care-providers experience a tremendous amount of psychological, social, and environmental stressors caused by hoarding. By providing an outlet for family members and care-providers to gather support, encouragement, and educational information, this project will reduce the level of stress placed on the family and/or care-providers of elderly hoarders, and in turn, the individuals who exhibit the hoarding behaviors. An extensive literature review provided information on the etiology of hoarding, the best-practice treatments currently available for hoarders, and the impact hoarding behavior has on family dynamics and relationships. The program was developed to take place at the Jewish and Family Services of Long Beach. The funding source to which the grant proposal was submitted is the Archstone Foundation. Submission and/or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of this project.
