"Het werk is eene compilatie uit andere boeken door 'zekeren' Broekhuysen (Brief van N. Wirsen bij Gebhard II 361), waarschijnlijk G. Van Broekhuizen."--Tiele, P.A. Nederl. bibl. van land- en volkenkunde, 1884, p. 165.
With fine engraved allegorical frontispiece by J. Luyken, and 19 fine engraved views and plates, of which 8 by Jan Luyken, the others by J. Harrewyn. First edition of a curious travel book, claimed to be translated from the papers of an English nobleman, but according to Tiele it was composed, from a great variety of older sources, by G. van Broekhuizen, a professional translator. Muller, at the other hand, seems convinced that the author was present at New York in 1668, at the height of the dispute between England and Holland over the possession of the country, as he uses the names New York and New Amsterdam indiscriminately. The second part of the present work, over 100 pages, deals with the Americas, giving next to a very detailed description of the New Netherlands, accounts of Virginia, Florida, Cuba, Haiti, Panama and Jamaica. The description of New Netherlands is mainly based upon Van der Donck and A. Montanus. All natural productions of the country are described and named in the Indian dialects of Guyana. The travels in the West Indies partly relate to the buccaneers, and a portrait of Francois Lolonois is present. The fine plates, made for the work by the celebrated Jan Luyken, rank among his best productions. One of them shows the Niagara Falls (facing p. 140).
