Abstract:

Memoirs of a Jew born in Brno. Covers the period from 1942, when Hindis was deported from Brno via Theresienstadt to Piaski, until July 1944, when he was liberated by the Soviets near Staw-Nowosioka. Describes life in the Piaski ghetto with several thousand Jews from various German cities. In June 1942 the ghetto was liquidated and Hindis was taken for short periods to labor camps near Sobibór; then, as an engineer, he was charged with planning and overseeing the drainage of swamps near the camp in Staw-Nowosioka. In December 1942 he was transferred to Sawin, but was allowed to return to Staw-Nowosioka in April 1943. After hearing that the camp was to be liquidated, he escaped and joined partisans in the forests. After the liberation he returned to Brno and learned that his sister had been killed in Vienna in 1942 and his brother had perished in Auschwitz. His wife had died of an illness in Brno in 1941.
