Abstract:

Discusses antisemitism in the French theater from the 1880s to the present. Pp. 13-96, "Images du Juif au théâtre de 1880 à nos jours", contain an essay by the author. Pp. 97-130, "Portraits", contain descriptions of some Jewish theatrical personalities or Jews frequently caricaturized onstage (e.g. the Rothschilds). Pp. 131-178 present theoretical texts (excerpts from published works by various writers, Jews and non-Jews, philosemites and antisemites) dealing with the "Jewish question" in the theater, and pp. 181-261 contain extracts from forgotten plays with antisemitic or pro-semitic messages. Jewish characters appeared in the French theater in the 1880s. Antisemitism was expressed on the stage whenever there was a new wave of immigration or when France was shaken by a political scandal involving Jews. Left-wing avant-garde plays contained as much anti-Jewish sentiment as right-wing boulevard theater. Édouard Drumont was the first to denounce "Jewish" and "Judaized" theater, and his analyses were adopted by Octave Mirbeau, Romain Rolland, and others. Directors like Gémier, Lugné-Poe, and Dullin helped spread anti-Jewish stereotypes on the French stage.
