Abstract:

Discusses cases of persecution by the Portuguese Inquisition of men of letters and science, among them New Christians, based on material from the Inquisition archives, letters, and even ballads of the time. The reports relate the development of each case, from the denunciation through the trial to the execution of the sentence. Most of the trials against New Christians mentioned here occurred during the 17th-early 18th centuries. Accused of observing Judaism to various degrees, they and their families received penalties ranging from imprisonment, confiscation of assets, or wearing prisoners' clothing for life, to death. The most important cases were those of António Homem (professor of canon law), Tomé Vaz (jurist), André d'Avelar (mathematician), Francisco Vaz de Gouvêa (jurist), António Vieira (priest), Antônio Serrão de Castro (pharmacist and poet), Duarte da Silva (banker), and António José da Silva (dramatist).
