Abstract:

Since his early childhood, Roro has been working on the La Fleury house in Martinique. Unlike his companions in misfortune, he learned to read. At the time of the abolition of slavery, in May 1848, in the general mess, it is thus a big dictionary that carries under the arm. With his freedom, his treasure is the most expensive! Free, Roro will become Romulus Bonnaventure. A time in household with the bellissime Peloponnese Beauséjour, a buxom Chabot with free manners and strong character, it arouses many jealousies. When the soldiers of Napoleon III, led by Maximilian Ier arrive at Martinique, bridgehead of the Mexican expedition, the life of our two heroes rocking. From 1861 to 1867, dozens of warships, carrying some thirty thousand soldiers of all nationalities, will stop at Fort-de-France. For Romulus, as for many islanders, the opportunity is too good: he joins the army and goes to conquer the Sierra Madre and Popocatepetl. On her side, Peloponnese Beauséjour becomes the maid of Empress Marie Charlotte Amélie. For all, the Mexican adventure is just beginning.
