Abstract:
The author provides a dual portrait of her two Jewish grandmothers--the rebellious Ester, who risked her life for the sake of her principles, and Ruzya, a censor under the Stalinist regime--who survived both the anti-Semitic cataclysm of the Holocaust and the terror of Stalinism.
