Abstract:

Abstract: Mental illness affects all racial groups. Some ethnic groups seek help from providers more often than others. There are various reasons for this, including cultural beliefs, stigmas, and language preference. This study looks at the relationship between feelings of depression among different ethnic backgrounds and whether or not those ethnic groups discussed their feelings with their medical providers. When feelings were discussed, the study looks to determine whether or not the discussion was done in a way that was understandable to the patient. Results of this study can be used to help determine if more cultural competence training is needed in the mental health field.
