Abstract:

Abstract: This project report examines the life and education of Eugène Ysaÿe, the pedagogy of the Franco-Belgian school of violin playing, and the inspiration behind Ysaÿe's Six Unaccompanied Sonatas for Solo Violin. It is a discussion of the challenges faced by the violinist in his younger years, his reputation as a performer and teacher, and his innovative ideas in composition. The information in this paper will be provided in hopes that it may guide violin students in their study of Ysaÿe's sonatas, give them insight into the background of the composer and his works, help draw correlations between this pieces and the related ones by Bach, and aid in their interpretation, performance, and understanding of the repertoire.
