Abstract:

In the present work a probabilistic methodology to estimate the seismic risk of buildings in urban areas is proposed. The seismic risk obtained through this methodology is expressed in terms of annual probabilities of exceedance versus damage grades and losses. The proposed methodology is called LM1_P because it has as starting point the LM1 methodology of Risk-UE. This methodology is based on a probabilistic approach. In order to assess the seismic risk of buildings, the methodology takes into account the seismic hazard from the place where each building is located and the seismic vulnerability of each studied building. The seismic hazard is expressed in terms of exceedance rates of macroseismic intensities, and the seismic vulnerability from each building is expressed in terms of probability density functions that describe the probabilities related to different values of the vulnerability index. In this methodology, the expected seismic damage is assessed through a semi-empirical and deterministic function, which relates the seismic hazard and the seismic vulnerability. In order to facilitate the application of the LM1_P methodology, a computer code has been developed. This code called USERISK 2011 allows assessing the seismic risk of the buildings of any urban area. The seismic risk of the buildings of Barcelona was assessed using the LM1_P methodology. This assessment included the following two steps: the probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of Barcelona and the seismic vulnerability assessment of the buildings of Barcelona. According to the results, the macroseismic intensity equal to VI has, on average, a return period of 278 years. At the same time, the macroseismic intensity that in Barcelona has, on average, a return period of 475 years is a value equal to 6.3 (VI-VII). On the other hand, according to the results of seismic vulnerability, the probability that the vulnerability index of Barcelona will be greater than 0.5 ranges between 79.05% and 93.21%, with a mean value of 87.91%. Finally, according to the curves of the average seismic risk of Barcelona, the moderate damage grade has an average annual frequency of exceedance that ranges between 5.09 x 10-3 and 9.92 x 10-3, with a mean value of 7.26 x 10-3.
