Notes: "The index covers the written expert reports submitted as testimony before the Indian Claims Commission in the course of litigation for a period of 25 years. Included are all those reports submitted by either a plaintiff or the Justice Department for which copies could be located during a year-long search. In the course of that search the files of the Commission, the Justice Department, the National Archives and of various attorneys were examined carefully, and in some cases repeatedly, in order to bring together the most complete collection possible."
The index is composed of four separate indexes: Tribal Index, Author Index, State Index, and Docket Number Index. The TRIBAL INDEX is a comprehensive guide to all of the dockets of the Commission. The tribes are listed in alphabetical order next to a group of docket numbers that list only those dockets in the Commission's records that deal with that particular tribe. The AUTHOR INDEX includes those authors whose reports are reproduced in this microfiche collection. The STATE INDEX takes into consideration only those reports in which the states covered were clearly identified in either the title or table of contents. The DOCKET INDEX contains a numerical listing in docket number order of all dockets. After the docket number is located, only the name of the plaintiff in the case is given.

"The Indian Claims Commission was created on August 13, 1946. Its purpose was to serve as a court of original jurisdiction for the hearing and determination of claims against the United States arising prior to August 13, 1946 by any Indian tribe, band or other identifiable group of Indians living in the United States. In this it exercises jurisdiction formerly resting with the United States Court of Claims under the previous system of passing special jurisdictional acts by Congress for individual tribes. The Court of of Claims has jurisdiction over claims arising after August 13, 1946"--Foreword.
