Abstract:

In 2011, The Royal British Legion (TRBL) sponsored a program through the Defence Recovery Capability to enable the development of the Battle Back Centre (BBC). The Centre's mission is to support the recovery of Armed Forces personnel who are Wounded (battle casualties), Injured (non-battle casualties) or Sick (physical/mental illness) (WIS). To achieve this, personnel attend a 5-day Multi-Activity Course (MAC) which uses adapted sport and adventure as vehicles for personal development. My PhD used a mixed-methods research design to explore the immediate impact of program participation. The aim of this case study is twofold. First, it will explore the value of mixed-methods research and demonstrate how a pre-test post-test quantitative design can be combined with participant observation and semi-structured interviews to explore a phenomenon. Second, it will highlight the challenges of conducting real-world fieldwork in an unfamiliar environment. In particular, it explores my concerns and the realities of being a female civilian, working in a military environment dominated by male personnel with life changing injuries and illnesses.
