Abstract:

"Demographic studies have shown that future years will result in increasing numbers of elderly living in New Zealand. Existing community resources are barely able to cope with the numbers today, and there is no doubt that these resources will need to be expanded in the near future. Last year the Wellington Old People's Welfare Council petitioned Government for a Commission of Inquiry to be established to study future policies on issues which affect the elderly. This was considered by Government, but it was felt the topic was too broad to be considered by one study but that investigations into specific areas of need should be carried out. The Social Advisory Council was subsequently invited to examine the future housing needs of elderly people, with particular emphasis on enabling them to remain self-sufficient, living in the community.
