Abstract:

A mother recalls how her brilliant teenage son came to shatter their idyllic family through one horribly violent and shocking act. Now, left to pick up the pieces, the survivors test the boundaries of their newly defined reality in this moving true crime exploration of the nature and limits of familial love.

Charity Lee Bennett walks a fine line between love and fear of her highly intelligent son Paris. It has been ten years since he killed Ella--her daughter and his sister--at age thirteen, and Charity is left questioning his chance at redemption and her ability to forgive, even as she's an advocate for both prisoners' rights and for victims of violent crime, and for "reformative justice" in the U.S. criminal justice system. We peel back the layers to reveal a family history previously marked by intra-family violence as she embraces motherhood for a third time with a new baby boy. Multiple accounts allow for conflicting points of view, leaving the audience questioning where the ultimate truth and accountability lie. --
