Abstract:

Australia has been fortunate in having a succession of enterprising commercial theatrical entrepreneurs who, for over a hundred years, have played an important part in the cultural development of their country. Of all these, the five Tait brothers - Charles, John, Edward, Nevin and Frank - reigned longer than any of their predecessors and had a great advantage over them all : their united strength. A Family of Brothers is an informal and entertaining history of one of Australia's most remarkable theatrical families: five brothers who starting with nothing but their own initiative and intelligence, ran the world's largest theatrical chain for nearly half a century. It is the story of their struggles, setbacks and successes, of the people who played an important part in the history of J. & N. Tait and J. C. Williamson Limited, and of those who nearly spelt The Firm's doom from time to time. Within the pages of A Family of Brothers is found all the humour, the heartbreaks, the gambles, the successes and the failures that show business entails. Famous names abound, all of whom were at one time or another engaged by the Taits: Melba, Gracie Fields, Menuhin, Sutherland, Oistrakh, Fonteyn; and in the field of musical comedy, Gladys Moncrieff, Strella Wilson, Alfred Firth, Gus Bluett, Madge Elliott and Cyril Ritchard, together with the stars of Oklahoma!, Annie Get Your Gun, South Pacific, and, of course, the greatest of them all, My Fair Lady. The author, Viola Tait, the widow of Sir Frank Tait, the youngest and last of the Tait brothers whose deat in 1965 brought down the curtain on the reign of Australia's most famous theatrical family, has written the first and only authentic history of The Firm and the part played in its success by the Taits, 'A Family of Brothers'. -- Inside cover.
