THIS DISSERTATION BASED ON THE TRADITIONAL LIBRARY RESEARCH AS WELL AS ON TWO STAYS IN CALIFORNIA, (SIX MONTHS IN 1983 AND THREE MONTHS IN 1985) ANALYSES THE DEVELOPMENT OF WOMEN'S STUDIES IN THE USA. CHAPTER I ET 2 ARE DEVOTED TO A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH WOMEN ENTERED THE ACADEMY. THIS LONG AND ARDUOUS ROAD LED TO AN APPARENT EQUALITY EXPOSED BY THE FEMINISTS. CURRICULA AND STRUCTURES WERE DESIGNED WITH A MALE WHITE POPULATION IN MIND, REFLECTING THE STRUCTURES OF SOCIETY, AND THIS LEADS WOMEN AND MINORITIES TO DROP OUT OF UNIVERSITY PREMATURELY OR TO MAKE DO WITH LITTLE PAID, UNREWARDING JOBS. CHAPTER 3 DEALS WITH THE FEMINIST CRITIQUE OF KNOWLEDGE AND RESEARCH (MAINLY OBJECTIVITY), WHICH BROUGHT ABOUT THIS IMBALANCE. THE PROPOSED FEMINIST RECONSTRUCTION OF KNOWLEDGE FOLLOWS. CHAPTER 4 PRESENTS THE COURSES AND COMPARES FOUR VERSIONS OF THE "INTRODUCTION COURSE". CHAPTER 5 EXPLORES FEMINIST PEDAGOGY AND A SURVEY AMONG A SAMPLE OF TEACHERS AND STUDENTS MEASURES ITS EFFECTS. CHAPTER 6 SITUATES WOMEN'S STUDIES IN THEIR ACADEMIC CONTEXT, IN RELATION TO THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE CAMPUS, THEN STRATEGICALLY : SHOULD WOMEN'S STUDIES BE MAINSTREAMED ? THE CONCLUSION STRESSES THE PROMISES OF A FEMINIST EDUCATION FOR RESEARCH AS WELL AS FOR TEACHING.
