Abstract:

This case is about designing, implementing, and analyzing field experiments using research conducted in the 2010 Midterm elections in the State of California (United States). The goal of the field experiment was to compare three commonly used mobilization techniques (door-to-door canvassing, live phone calls, and direct mailers) to determine which was the most effective at increasing voter turnout. This case helps identify the pros and cons of field experiments by discussing design and implementation and should inform those considering conducting field experiments what to be aware of when working on large-scale field experiments where the researcher must forfeit some control.
