Abstract:

In a tradition-bound Middle Eastern village, Nisrina Huniah, a fifteen-year-old girl, marries Jabran Yusef, a man of her father's choosing, but falls in love on the night they are wed. Living with her new husband in the fertile hills around the Jordan River, Nisrina's world at last feels secure and complete. But then the First World War erupts, and Nisrina, desperate to support her family, agrees to leave her three small children and travel to Jerusalem to learn the art of midwifery. When she returns, she finds the circumstances at home have drastically changed, and she must now struggle against nefarious family members who covet her position as mother to the sole male heir.
