Abstract:

This program shows how to lay the foundations for developing literacy skills from birth up to the age of five, providing insights into how playful activities such as symbolic mark making, pretend play, taking time for conversation, and sharing stories that support the development of language, reading, and writing. Presenting what kind of learning needs to happen before actual reading and writing begins, the program highlights how everyday stimulating activities lay the foundations for early literacy. Made in collaboration with psychologist and early childhood specialist Jennie Lindon, the program examines research and theories on developing skills of literacy and their practical implications and offers actual examples of children that demonstrate the reality of how these theories can be seamlessly combined into everyday experiences for children.
