Abstract:

Just as the first year is a ’new beginning’ for law students into the world of law, so too is this book a ‘new beginning’ for law schools – a set of ideas, strategies and solutions for addressing the diverse challenges involved in enhancing the first-year learning experience. The suggestions are many and varied: new teaching methods to engage students in the learning experience; emphasis on ethical behaviours; techniques for ensuring the health and well-being of first-year students; new ideas for support infrastructure to improve performance; and reform processes to integrate the first-year experience into the rest of the law degree. With a blend of both theory and practice, each chapter suggests and reflects on practical solutions to advancing student resilience, learning outcomes, law program quality and compliance with industry and accreditation requirements. This book is an ideal resource for law schools seeking to create the optimal first-year experience in legal education.
