Abstract:

Abstract: This study analyzed consumer viewpoints and understanding of common food labels found amongst packaged foods as they are intended to guide consumers to make educated decisions prior to purchasing food products. With an increased exposure of varying labels including nutrition facts panel, nutritive content claims, and third-party certification labels, a survey, via Qualtrics, was developed to assess consumer knowledge amongst food labels between males and females. Furthermore, perceptions of selected third-party labels were analyzed using label recognition questions. The survey was available online where participants were recruited using flyers and snowball sampling. A total of 87 individuals were recruited, with males (n = 34) and females (n = 54). Participants scanned a QR code printed on the flyer to gain access or used an accessible survey link. Differences were analyzed using an independent sample t-test with level of significance set at p d"0.05. It was found there was a significant (p <0.001) difference between males' and females' knowledge and perceptions (p <0.001) of third-party certification labels. However, no significant differences were found amongst the knowledge of males and females for nutrition facts panel and nutritive content claims as p d"0.05.
