Abstract:

Pp. 1-152 present the memoirs of Lovell (1907-1976), which he finished writing just before his death. He was born to a Jewish immigrant family in Willowmore, South Africa, and later lived in Benoni. Notes that the rise of antisemitism in South Africa after 1933 was one of the factors that caused Lovell, a young lawyer, to rush into politics. Describes the fight that he and other Jewish activists in Benoni and Johannesburg conducted against rising pro-Nazi organizations of Blackshirts and Greyshirts. In 1938 he and others succeeded in thwarting a pro-Nazi rally in Benoni, but failed in Johannesburg, due to support for the Blackshirts and Greyshirts by Malan's Nationalist Party and the police. In 1959, Lovell became an MP for the Labour Party; in the Parliament he was also confronted with antisemitism.
