Abstract:
Following phenomenological and comprehensive perspectives, this doctoral dissertation describes the contexts of men-to-men cruising for sex and sex work focussing on space, time and mobility. Ethnographic data collected in public spaces located in the south of France and Barcelona over a decade (1995-2005) challenge AIDS research categorization in term of sexual identity and marital status, and confront urban sociology to an anthropology of secrecy. Examining transitions from a place to the other and interactions where the action is, reveals “sexual territories” that extend beyond urban night scenes, articulating with daily timetable and routines. Rapidly transforming in the city, or anciently located on cadastral borders in the countryside, they raise a problem of localization and duration, partly solved here by the notion of psychological “shift” of identity, i.e. a search of transitory transformations of the self.
