General description of the collection: The collection of Frederick H. Delano spans the years 1898-1971, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period between 1910 and 1920. The collection documents Delano's military service in the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC). The collection is arranged into six series: Personnel Documents, Correspondence, Personal Papers, Research Materials, Printed Materials, and Photographs. The Personnel Documents series, 18 May 1898-22 Aug 1919, circa 1942, circa 1944, undated, is arranged chronologically with letters and memorandums concerning orders, appointments, and promotions first, followed by a second chronological set with records of Delano's USMC service. The second set includes a memorandum regarding his commendation for 'conspicuous courage, coolness and skill' while serving. The Correspondence series, 1 Feb 1906-circa 1918, is arranged with one folder of official correspondence followed by personal correspondence. The official correspondence is comprised of a telegram regarding the serious illness of his brother, Philip. The personal correspondence is arranged by correspondent with letters from Delano to his mother first, followed by letters from Delano to his father, and finally letters from other individuals to Delano's mother. The majority of the letters include transcriptions. The Personal Papers series, circa 1912-circa 1920, is arranged first by materials kept in original order from a black binder which includes a school paper by Delano, a 1927 news clipping, a lecture by Commander Frank H. Schofield, flow charts, notes about the USMC, and a certified statement regarding the service record of fellow Marine Frederick C. Ladd. The black binder materials are followed by a short story by an unknown author regarding sailing in the Pacific. The Research Materials series, circa 1971, is arranged in the original order in which it was acquired and includes notes regarding Frederick H. Delano, his father Francis H. Delano, and Vera Cruz, Mexico. It is arranged according to the original order in which it came. Also included are excerpts from printed materials (articles). The Printed Materials series, circa 1914, is arranged in the order the articles were found together in the collection and includes news clippings regarding the U.S. involvement at Vera Cruz, Mexico (some articles mention Frederick H. Delano). The Photographs series, circa 1910-circa 1920s, undated, is arranged by material type with albums first, followed by photos found together, and loose photos. A USE COPY of the album is located before the photographs themselves. The photographs are primarily images of U.S. Marines and Sailors in Cuba in 1910 and in Vera Cruz, Mexico in 1914. There is one photo of Delano's parents in their later years and one photo of Frederick H. Delano while an active duty U.S. Marine.  Read more...
