Abstract:

This work describes a frequency distribution, or 'frequency', for a categorical variable. A frequency distribution reports how many and what percentage of observations fall into each category for that variable. This example uses a subset of data from the 2006 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) 2006 survey of adults. It presents frequency distributions of the provinces in China in which respondents lived and whether or not they report having ever smoked cigarettes. Medical experts warn that cigarettes currently kill one million people in China every year, with this expected to triple by 2030. Results from an analysis like this could have implications for public health policy.
