Abstract:

"When Dora O'Brien studied Russian in London in the late 1960s, she dreamed of working in Russia. Nearly thirty years later, she was offered a job teaching English in a school in Moscow. She moved to a small flat in a high-rise building and became part of the community centred around the school. She lived as a Russian." "From Moscow is a vivid account of the way things are done in a Russian school at a time when Russia itself is in transition." "But the book does more than explore the educational system. It describes a series of encounters with Russian people, trying to explain their warmth, their resourcefulness in difficult times, their great sense of fun and ability to enjoy themselves. Above all, the author attempts to counteract the horror stories which appear in the Western media by describing the life of a school, its pupils, its staff and of many other ordinary Russians in their endeavours to lead a normal life in very difficult conditions."--BOOK JACKET.
