Abstract:

The Future Looked So Good is a full-length, creative nonfiction stage play that explores the writer's family legacy, intergenerational dynamics and inherited memory. Six actors play multiple roles, bringing the play to life through ensemble storytelling. Sasha, a theatre artist and writer, acquires a collection of cassette tapes from 1988 containing an interview of her grandfather Hyman on his deathbed, conducted by his eldest son (Sasha's estranged uncle) Edward. On her journey to discover who Hyman was and learn about her family history, Sasha interviews his grown children -- her aunt Joyce, uncles Edward and Joel, and her mother Sharon. She speaks with them over Skype about the intricacies of their individual relationships with their father and memories of their pasts. Deep complexities come to light, through the disclosure and discussion of the seemingly loveless relationship between Hyman and his wife Anne, who had married him as a young widow with another man's child -- a fact kept secret from the siblings until puberty. Sasha weaves her present-day interviews with family, process-oriented conversations with her friends and fiancée, and the 1988 interview. By looking into the past, Sasha's life is turned upside down; the struggle of creating the play catalyzes her reckoning with her identity as a future wife and mother.
