Abstract:
Given how many terrible events occurred in the First World War, Gallipoli still holds a unique place. Half a million Allied and half a million Ottoman troops fought each other for months over possession of a barren, craggy peninsula under conditions which were nightmarish for all combatants. Now, ninety years later, Harvey Broadbent has produced an illustrated history, drawing heavily on oral accounts by veterans of both sides. Gallipoli: the Fatal Shore is a fitting tribute to the agonies of those who fought here and shows how crucial the battle was in forging the modern national identity of Australia, New Zealand and the Turkish Republic.
