Abstract:

In response to the widespead view that Christians (including the head of the Catholic Church) did little to help Jews during the Holocaust, presents examples of high-ranking Catholic, Protestant, and other Christian clergy who rescued Jews. Cites cases from many European countries. Discusses Pope Pius XII's 1942 Christmas message that denounced racism and the role played by the Catholic Church in protecting the Jews of Rome. Most of the material and quotations are taken from the author's book "The Righteous". Stresses that many of the Righteous among the Nations recognized by Yad Vashem are priests and Church leaders. Pp. 66-101 contain Eilert Herms' "Address on the Occasion of the 2003 Dr. Leopold-Lucas-Award" (also in English and German) which was given to Martin Gilbert.
