Title page includes contents and index notes, with detailed contents list on verso and a list of newspapers and journals from which excerpts were published during the year.
Monthly issues include short caption title following title pages at head of first page of text (most bound issues lack title pages).
Includes opinions and comment on other currently published newspapers and magazines, reprinted extracts from these papers, original poetry, and a summary of monthly events. "The Monthy Intelligencer", which includes gossip, court, military and government news, crime news, births, marriages, deaths, preferments, a mortality table, and stock and commodity prices.
Immediately upon publication this became the most popular and enduring journal of the century. As a result, the early numbers were reprinted as many as nine times to meet unexpected demand. In addition to these early re-impressions and re-printings, there have been counterfeits, many subsequent reprints, facsimile reprints and new editions through the 18th and 19th centuries. Annual volumes may contain any assortment of impressions or reprints of the monthly numbers. "The bibliographical history of The Gentleman's magazine is entirely conjectural" (Todd, p.81).
Issues nos. 1, 2, 4 are 5th ed.
