Abstract:

The collection contains memos, news releases, routing and follow-slips, reports, manuals, speeches, statements, proposed legislation, lobbying efforts for individual projects and land acquisitions, hearings, testimonies by Hartzog, newspaper/magazine articles and editorials, photographs, maps, notes, booklets, brochures, pamphlets, and speeches by Hartzog and other individuals. Some of the parks covered in this collection include the Rocky Mountains, Great Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone and Yosemite. In addition, material regarding proposed national parks and reserves in Alaska and the proposed Trans-Alaska Pipeline are filed in this collection. There is a small amount of correspondence from personal friends and supporters such as Ansel Adams, photographer and environmentalist, and Horace M. Albright, co-founder and second Director of the National Parks Service. Also, some information on Hartzog's book, "Battling for the National Parks," can be found in this collection. In addition, there is material from the period following Hartzog's resignation from the National Park Service in December, 1972. Most of the collection dates from 1960s to 1970s and reflects Hartzog's long involvement with the National Park Service, especially his eight-year tenure as its Director. Also, some of the papers are associated with his earlier principle assignments for the National Park Service.
