Abstract:

The George C. Wallace campaign records, 1962-1984, n.d., document the administration of two presidential campaigns, and provide limited information on several smaller campaigns. In addition to documenting the fiscal and logistical details of running a national campaign, the records illustrate the political climate of the 1970's, including issues on race relations and communism, as well as Wallace's grass-roots appeal.

The strengths of this collection are in its ability to document Wallace's working class appeal, his stand on a variety of political issues, and the substantial amount of capital necessary to finance a large scale campaign.

The correspondence and contribution information reveal the vast array of Wallace supporters who sent campaign contributions and letters of support and admiration. The campaign supporters ranged from well-known, wealthy individuals to working class people struggling to survive on meager incomes. Many followers devotedly supported Wallace throughout his long political career and considered him the spokesman and protector of the common man.

The speeches, position papers and audio recordings provide valuable insight into the Wallace campaign's stand on a wide variety of issues, including busing, communism, education, crime, and women's issues. Various political organizations sent position papers to the campaign suggesting the stands their groups desired the Wallace campaign to take on key issues.

Financial information is provided through the various records of expenditures and through the contribution records. The Federal Election Commission records provide summary financial information at regular intervals over a number of years, allowing a longitudinal approach to information on contributions, primary expenditures, debts and obligations.

Much of the remainder of the collection consists of records of a routine administrative nature. Included in this category are a variety of records generated and maintained by the personnel office and the mail room, as well as numerous invoices, bills, receipts, and satellite office records which document the day to day operations of the campaign; banking records covering over twenty-five checking, payroll and savings accounts; assorted poorly identified ledgers; tax records; reference files; and a variety of legal papers.

Artifacts, consisting primarily of campaign memorabilia, have been transferred to the museum section for cataloging and storage.
