Abstract:

Consisting of Civil War letters, originals and photocopies, from Confederate seaman George Weber to his younger brothers, Louis and James. Correspondence describes daily regimen onboard the steamship Patrick Henry; military engagements involving ironclad vessels in the vicinity of Jamestown, Mulberry Island, and Newport News, Va.; and new technologies and methods in naval warfare, including ironclad ships, underwater and floating torpedoes, and the testing of the system against the Patrick Henry using floating torpedoes filled with rice.

Letters, August-November 1861, describe a visit by Commodore Matthew Fontaine Maury; the Federal blockade of the James River; and naval bombardments between the Patrick Henry, Federal frigates and gunboats, and land batteries, near Newport News, Va. Letters, 1862, describe the ironclad Merrimac's victories over the U.S.S. Cumberland and U.S.S. Congress, and the production of Confederate gunboats then nearing completion in Charleston, S.C.
