Description: 63 pages : illustrations ; 23 cm
Contents: Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) --
Anna Botsford Comstock (1854-1930) --
Frances Hamerstrom (1907-1998) --
Rachel Carson (1907-1964) --
Miriam Rothschild (1908- ) --
Jane Goodall (1934- ). These women all grew up to become award-winning scientists, writers and artists, as comfortable with a pen as with a magnifying glass. They all started out as girls who didn't run from spiders or snakes, but crouched down to take a closer look. Often they were discouraged from getting dirty, much less pursuing careers in science. But they all became enthusiastic teachers, energetic writers, and passionate scientists --
frequently the only women in their fields. They each overcame opposition and found ways to pass on their vision of how all lives in nature are beautifully connected. Their stories remind us to look and to look harder and then to look again. Under rotten logs or in puddles, there are amazing things to see.
Responsibility: by Jeannine Atkins ; illustrated by Paula Conner.

When approached by Dawn Publications to consider illustrating the manuscript for "Girls", I was excited and flattered, especially once informed that Jeannine Atkins was the author. Wanting the opportunity to finally be published after thirty years as a professional artist, but careful to consider the merit of the writing to which my artwork would be attached, I took my time reading this small but mighty book. It didn't take long to appreciate Jeannine Atkins' unique ability to imaginatively turn what might otherwise by dry historical fact into beautifully woven biographical tales. Each story gives us an amazing and insightful glimpse into the lives of six real girls who, as Atkins reveals in her introduction, "grew up to become award-winning scientists and writers". After accepting the assignment, spending about three months on research for it, I began work on the twenty interior charcoal illustrations. It took over six months to complete the artwork, including the cover art in oil. I'm confident you'll appreciate the traditional realism of the work. I hold the copyrights on all the above-mentioned artwork for "Girls who looked under rocks: the lives of six pioneering naturalists", and feel proud to be connected to this well-crafted biographical work. It is my hope that my illustrations not only enhance the historical narrative, but portray (in the fullest sense of the word) and reveal much about these amazing characters and the periods in which they defined themselves. Respectfully Submitted, Paula Conner Illustrator/Artist
