Abstract:
A semi-autobiographical novel about John Grimes, a young man living in Harlem in the 1930s. His relationship with his strict preacher stepfather, Gabriel, who moved from the South to escape his past, and the role of the Pentecostal Church in the lives of African Americans, are central themes of the novel.
