Abstract:
This map of Sullivan's Island and the Isle of Palms is surrounded with boxes of text in which the author describes a packet of papers found by his grandfather, Joseph Temple Spence, which provided notes written by a sailor named Edgar A. Perry who had served at Ft. Moultrie. He also tells of trees which may have been the Gold Bug Tree; of skeletons found on the back side of the Isle of Palms; of the careening of ships along the barrier islands; of the cryptogram mentioned in Poe's book; and of the pest house on Sullivan's Island.
