Abstract:

Arthur B. Langlie was elected to two non-consecutive terms as governor of Washington, 1941-45 and 1949-57. The present collection documents his first term, during which Governor Langlie was concerned primarily with the impact of World War II. His papers consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence, reports, and studies pertaining to state government affairs.

Of particular interest in his papers is the documentation of wartime issues such as highway development to serve the ports, the establishment of Protective Defense Areas, war salvage and finance efforts, shipbuilding, and other activities relating to Washington's role as a major staging area for the war in the Pacific. Also of interest are his files pertaining to industrial development conservation, forest rehabilitation, educational reform, and unemployment insurance.
