Abstract:

Abstract: The purpose of this project was to locate a potential funding source and write a grant to hire a social worker to provide intensive case management to individuals with severe mental illness who are receiving money management services in Los Angeles County. The literature revealed that severe mental illness presents individuals with a number of risk factors, such as homelessness, incarceration, unemployment, substance abuse, hospitalization, poverty, loneliness, and a decreased quality of life. These risk factors are best ameliorated through comprehensive services within the context of a low staff to client ratio. More specifically, the literature revealed that intensive case managers provide effective comprehensive services through assessment, linkage, and advocacy. A search was conducted to locate an appropriate funder for the proposed program. The Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation was chosen as the target funder because of their history funding programs that seek to enhance life satisfaction and independence for individuals with disabilities.
