Abstract:

Abstract: The purpose of this grant proposal is to obtain funding for start-up operating costs for the Escuela de Tareas program. This program will provide cross-age peer mentoring in the underserved, low-income Ramona Gardens community of East Los Angeles. A review of the literature suggests poverty and other risk factors have a devastating effect on the development of young people. Mentoring is an intervention that can lower some of these negative effects. Additionally, the research confirms that successful mentoring programs implement a thorough screening process, interactive and multifaceted mentor training, ongoing supervision, and support for their mentors. A total of $53,976.38 is requested to assist the Escuela de Tareas program to develop and implement guidelines and procedures for screening, training, supervision, and ongoing support of the mentors.
