Abstract:
A biography of Szapiro-Sawicka (1917-1943), aimed for young readers in communist Poland. The author was Sawicka's friend before and during the war. They both were active in the communist underground organization. Presents Sawicka's strong involvement in communist ideas already before the war. During the war she was a member of the Polish Workers' Party and was active in the Aid Committee for the Victims of Fascism. She was arrested as a Polish resister and killed in 1943 in Pawiak, the Gestapo prison in Warsaw. The author barely relates to Sawicka's Jewishness. In communist Poland Sawicka was presented as a young war heroine, but her origin was "forgotten".
