Abstract:

Describes Hannah Arendt's life in Germany up to 1933 and her emigration to Paris where she was active in the struggle against fascism and a member of the Ligue Internationale contre l'Antisemitisme, speaking at several conferences. She emigrated to the USA in 1941. Discusses her book "The Origins of Totalitarianism" (1951), which contains an important chapter on antisemitism, and "Eichmann in Jerusalem" (1961) on the Eichmann trial, which aroused violent criticism and led to accusations against her of Jewish self-hatred and anti-Zionism. Concludes that these accusations are not justified and result from a failure to understand her work.
