Abstract:

On a farm outside Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Samuel Wade grows up believing his mother, Caroline, is a widow. That she is not is only one of her many secrets. In addition to rearing Sam and taking care of her farm, Caroline also oversees a burgeoning shoe manufacturing business. For the sake of her son - who hopes to attend West Point - and her business, it is critical that the truth of her past remains closely guarded. Simon Thornton, first-born son of politically powerful Alabama state senator Henry Thornton and his Ohio-born wife Victoria, grows up as the privileged child of a genteel plantation family of the antebellum South. Simon attends the Virginia Military Institute, graduating just in time to accept a commission in the fledgling Confederate army.

During fierce fighting outside Richmond in what would become known as the Seven Days, Capt. Samuel Wade's artillery battery is overrun by attacking Confederate infantry led by Lt. Simon Thornton. As Sam looks out from the huddled mass of captured Union soldiers, he is startled by his striking resemblance to the Rebel officer. Sam's capture commences a dramatic series of events for both him and Caroline that provides the framework for this fast-paced, action-packed novel. His efforts to unravel the mystery of his "twin" in gray lead to the uncovering of a brutal act from years past, the terrible truth of which is known only to Victoria Thornton and her sister, Yankee industrialist Caroline Wade. Author Ted Jones brings the era of the Civil War to life as you travel with him along the hard road to Gettysburg.
