Abstract:

Personal and family correspondence, poems, genealogical writings, literary manuscripts, clippings, and a few papers, 1803-1944, of Rev. Henry Osgood Du Bois of New York City, and a few other members of the Du Bois and Smith families.

Correspondence, 1868-1844, of Henry O. Du Bois includes ca. 50 letters from his fiancée, Emily Stuart Meier Smith, written during May-September, 1876, when she was away from New York, concerning personal matters, private sentiments, etc. Also included are 13 letters from Henry to Emily and his daughter, (Mary) Constance, written in 1908, when he travelling in Europe (principally Italy); and ca. 55 personal letters from his Friend, Henry Curtis, London, during 1925-1944, discussing a variety of topics such as literature, theology, history, the current pacifist movement in England, etc. Other materials include a few letters and autographs from prominent persons or thier representatives, including the writer George Macdonald, President Grant, and Charles Kingsley; 8 pieces of correspondence, 1798-1806, of Rev. John C. Kunze, including 5 letters to Kunze from Jeremiah Van Rensselaer, Albany; United States passport, certificate of United States citizenship, and 1832 will of Casper Meier of New York City; 2 letters by Doctor Albert Smith of New Rochelle to his family, along with his 1817 military appointment as surgeon's mate in the 12th Regiment of the New York State Militia; poems, riddles, acrostics, and assorted writings by members of the Du Bois family; commonplace book of Mary A. Dodge, 1825; locks of hair from Du Bois' wife and daughter; and various genealogical notes and writings on the history of the Smith, Meier, Stuart, and related families.
