Abstract:

In pt. 1 (p. 15-167), "Europa", Kaufmann relates her experiences during World War II. She was born in Vienna in 1920 to the Hahn family, Jewish bankers of Czech origin. After the Anschluss in 1938 Kaufmann was sent by her parents to her grandmother and aunt in Olmütz, Czechoslovakia, where they soon joined her. She and her parents travelled to Prague and survived in various apartments and guesthouses until they reached the "Flora" hotel, managed by Vojtěch Kaufmann, whom Ilse married in 1940. The Argentinian consul in Prague, Carlos Tomás Brunel, lived in the same hotel and hired Kaufmann as a secretary of the consulate after he lost his manager's position because he was a Jew. Brunel provided the family with Argentinian documents and helped them obtain permission to emigrate to Argentina; the Hahns did so in 1941, and the Kaufmanns in 1942. Kaufmann's grandmother and aunt were deported to Theresienstadt and not heard from again.
